Introduction

The Gini index is being hotly argued by the academics in China currently. Starting from the concept of income and using 2007 data from the CHIP household survey, the paper makes detailed explanations of a series of important problems of measurement of residents' income gap behind this index, by some data simulations and empirical analyses. The problems discussed in this paper include the basic data source, the selection of income index, the treatment of outliers, the adjustment of regional price differential and the missing of high-income samples. Moreover, the paper makes a reasonable judgment of the range of China's Gini index according to analyze the household survey samples of the NBS and Southwestern University of Finance and Economics and the international comparison data.
