It was his foresight and outstanding leadership which created the CHIP Programme. And it was his support and kindness that enabled me to become a CHIP team member. That is what has led me to study the Chinese economy for more than two decades. The CHIP surveys have made a tremendous contribution to understanding of China's economy and society. The CHIP volumes and the many associated research papers are a wonderful legacy for Lao Zhao.
