Gijs Dekkers, President of the international microsimulation Association; Li Shantong, Researcher at Development Research Center of the State Council; Professor Li Shi, Executive Director of CIID; Chen Jun, Head of Income Distribution Division in Department of Employment and Income Distribution of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC); Wang Guocheng and Zhang Yanqun, researchers at Institute of Quantitative and Technical Economics of Chinese Academy of Social Science; Xiong Linping, Professor from The Second Military Medical University; Professor Zhang Shiwei, Dean of Business School of Jilin University; Zhang Yiming, Director of Policy Simulation Lab in Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security; Wang Xinmei; Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Population and Labor Economics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and many others participated the workshop. “Public Policy Microsimulation Analysis” courses are lectured by Professor Gijs Dekkers. Over 100 educators and students form top Higher Institutions in Beijing participated in the course.

Workshop on China Microsimulation Research

On 14th March, domestic and international experts and academia in the field of microsimulation gathered at the Second Conference Room and presented on the current state and future development on Microsimulation Research in China.

At the beginning of the conference, Professor Li Shi presented his opening words and welcomed the visit of Gijs Dekker and the participation of other experts and academia. At the same time, he expressed his best wishes of inviting more experts and academia to cooperate with CPS and promote the development of this field of study.

Li Shantong, Researcher at Development Research Center of the State Council, introduced the current state of development of microsimulation in China and commented on this workshop as a great start to have the first gathering in microsimulation area in China. He also express his great expression of the future development of this field in China.

Gijs Dekkers, President of the international microsimulation Association, briefly introduced the people, organization, major publication and major partners such as NATSEM of the association. He believed that China is a vast market with plenty of excellent researchers. He further debuted that if more and more Chinese studies and research could add in elements of microsimulation, it would be of high significance to the development of this field.

Chen Jun, Head of Income Distribution Division in Department of Employment and Income Distribution of National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), recalled his internship experience in NATSEM and hoped that microsimulation could provide more support and evidence for better policy making in China.

Professor Li Shi, Executive Director of CIID, presented the certificate of Honored researcher at CPS BNU to Gijs Dekkers.

Wan Haiyuan, Vice Director of CIID; Wan Xiangyu and Zhan Peng from CPS; Li Shantong, Researcher at Development Research Center of the State Council; Wang Guocheng and Zhang Yanqun, researchers at Institute of Quantitative and Technical Economics of Chinese Academy of Social Science; Xiong Linping, Professor from The Second Military Medical University; Professor Zhang Shiwei, Dean of Business School of Jilin University; Zhang Yiming, Director of Policy Simulation Lab in Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and Wang Xinmei, Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Population and Labor Economics of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), all shared their experience on the theory and practice of microsimulation in China.

In the end, Gijs Dekker commented all the previous sharing and showed great faith in bring about break through on microsimulation in China. He also gave precious advice and proposals to future development. Professor Li Shantong presented the closing words and wished that the workshop would be able to concentrate the major research resources in this field and promote a better future of microsimulation and more scientific-based public policy decision making.

Courses on Public Policy Microsimulation Analysis

On 14th March, Public Policy Microsimulation Analysis Courses was held in 9406 Jinshi Hotel. Over 100 educators and students form top Higher Institutions in Beijing participated in the course.

This short course series include five themes: “Brief on dynamic microsimulation models from EU members’ non-academic departments”, “Applications on dynamic microsimulation—The social and budgetary impacts of recent social security reform in Belgium”, “LIAM2: a New Open Source Development Tool for Discrete-Time Dynamic Microsimulation Models”, “What are the consequences of the European AWG-projections on the adequacy of pensions? An application of the dynamic microsimulation model MIDAS for Belgium, Sweden and Hungary”. Professor Derrek made the difficult concept very easily explained in his lectures and answered many questions from the audience.

Many audiences stayed after the lectures to talked to the professor and shared their inquiries and opinions. This marked the end of the short series course.
